Why your Facebook fundraiser may have flopped đź’¸
Apr 15, 2025
Let’s play a little game of spot-the-difference:
Fundraiser A:
"Support our work helping women in crisis."
No specific goal. No person. Just... vibes.
Fundraiser B:
"This time last year, Amy and her three kids were sleeping in their car. Today, they’re safe, housed and happy, and your donation can help the next family do the same."
Which one are you more likely to donate to?
Exactly.
Here’s what I want you to know (and it might sting a little):
If your Facebook fundraiser didn’t do as well as you hoped—it’s probably not because people don’t care. It’s because you didn’t make them feel something.
And before you panic or spiral, hear me out:
You’re not doing it wrong because you’re not passionate.
You’re not missing donations because your cause isn’t worthy.
You’re just missing the story.
I see this all the time. You're juggling a million things, scrambling to get the fundraiser out before the deadline, and it ends up being a quick post with a stock image and a story about the campaign.
But generic doesn’t convert.
Storytelling does.
That’s not just me saying it—there’s data to back it up. Campaigns with emotional, specific, personal stories raise significantly more than those that don’t.
So here’s your fix-it checklist for the next time:
-
Start with a real person. Give us a name, a face, a moment.
-
Paint the before + after. Let your audience feel the transformation.
-
Make it crystal clear how their donation helps. (As in: $50 = one night in a safe motel. Not “it supports our programs.”)
I hope that helps you because I am here to tell you Facebook (and Instagram) fundraising DOES work and other causes are making income this way, so if you aren't - you're missing out.
If you need more help - do check out my website. As you know (unless you're brand new to my world) I've taken a LOT of my best knowledge and in a labour of love made them into super affordable short classes you can take right on my website. And Facebook Fundraising is one of them.
Inside my “Fundraise on Facebook Like a Professional” Masterclass, I walk you through:
How to set up the Meta Fundraising features
) What actually works on Facebook (and what to ditch)
How to craft a story that sparks donations
And the little tweaks that turn meh into money
It’s 1 hour. It’s $50. And honestly? It’s probably going to change how you fundraise forever.
But even if you don't take my class, I know you're not far off a new revenue stream that works.
You just need a better story—and the confidence to tell it.
Cheering you on,
Alecia
P.S. You don’t need more graphics or another Canva template. You need a message that connects!
